Gifted with Purpose: Why I Started Tartan & Twine
Gifting has always been my love language. I’ve long been the person who lights up at the chance to find just the right thing for someone I care about. For me, it’s not about spending a lot—it’s about meaning, intention, and that spark of joy when someone feels truly seen. When the idea for Tartan & Twine came to me, it was like all the pieces of who I am clicked into place. Here’s why I started this little business that means so much to me:
I’ve always been “the gift giver.”
Among my friends and family, I’ve earned a bit of a reputation for being the one who always nails it when it comes to gifting. I know it might sound a little braggy—but it’s true! I just love the feeling of choosing a gift that makes someone feel seen and celebrated.
To me, gifting is a creative challenge.
I treat every occasion as a fun puzzle: How personal can I make this? How much thought and care can I pour into it? Whether it’s matching someone’s aesthetic or finding the perfect little something they didn’t know they needed, I love the art of intentional gifting.
I believe in the magic of shopping local.
Nova Scotia is bursting with beauty—both in nature and in the talented makers who live here. I genuinely believe the most thoughtful, charming, and meaningful gifts are the ones crafted right here at home. Supporting local is part of my heart, and now it’s part of my business too.
Motherhood reshaped my priorities.
Becoming a first-time mum made me rethink everything. I knew I wanted a path that allowed me to stay close to my baby boy while also building something I could be proud of. Tartan & Twine became that dream—something I could nurture alongside him.
It all started with a gift for my best friend.
One of the sparks behind Tartan & Twine came when I wanted to send a curated gift box to my best friend in Ontario, who was expecting her second baby. I found a website that let me choose each item myself, and they wrapped and delivered it for me. It felt like I had packed it with love—even though I never left my house.
That was my “aha” moment.
I realized I would absolutely use a service like that if it existed in Nova Scotia. And then it hit me—why not be the one to bring it to life? That was the beginning of Tartan & Twine—a way to make meaningful gifting more personal, more local, and more accessible.
Starting Tartan & Twine has been such a meaningful journey for me — one that combines creativity, community, and heart. I’m so excited to be pouring my energy into something that not only lets me do what I love, but also gives me the flexibility to be present in this sweet season of motherhood.
